I think they are trying to find an escape route away from that %$#*! dog that is balancing rocks on his nose.
That bronze dog is one of my favorite pieces of public art in Walla Walla. It's also a favorite among other locals and tourists alike. But I agree the live canines might be wondering if they are expected to perform similarly.
I've seen dogs here inspecting very carefully a statue of a dog. Some have very odd reactions to it!
